DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION  

The Defending Dissent Foundation is a newly coalesced civil liberties organization based in the Washington, DC area, which was first founded as the National Committee to Abolish HUAC (the House UnAmerican Activities Committee), then changed to NCARL.   Defending Dissent Foundation is an advocacy organization whose mission is to protect and advance the right of dissent in the United States by:

  • translating grassroots civil liberties concerns into national policy debate and action,
  • alerting local activists to civil liberties threats, and
  • educating the public, the press and policymakers about how dissent is crucial to democracy.

Requirements:

At least 5 years experience in the field, preferably with a civil liberties-related organization.  Familiarity with the lobbying process and some of the array of national organizations very helpful.   Familiarity with legal writing (legislation and litigation) useful. Must be a fluid and clear writer and be comfortable speaking to groups and to the media in a concise and accessible style. Some fundraising experience.

Strategic thinking, patience and problem-solving skills essential.  Has to be a self-starter, strongly motivated by civil liberties issues.  Eagerness to reach out to groups and individuals varied by race, ethnicity, religion, politics and issues is a plus. 

Tasks: 

  • Write a short monthly letter of analysis and action on current litigation, legislation, and activist work.
  • Individual and foundation fundraising.
  • Direct small staff and consultants.  Work closely with board. Oversee and task bookkeeper and accountant. Oversee two book publishers
  • Work extensively on the computer – with listserves, website design or at least updating, and with coalitions.   Familiarity with word processing, accounting and web design.    
  • Participate in and sometimes lead a variety of coalitions and listserve participants to move forward on targeted issues.

Hours and Compensation:

Variable but generally half-time job with flexible hours.   Benefits: 2 weeks vacation to start, ½ day per month sick days, pro-rated health insurance.  Compensation: $35-40,000.
